THE AMPOLLETTA BASTION

 

The elegant and imposing Ampolletta bastion shows off Antonio Da Sangallo the elder’s

design to perfection.

Geometrically speaking, the bastion can be inscribed in an equilateral triangle.

The domed vault of the circular inner room creates an unusual phenomenon of sound

refraction.

The narrow rectangular room next to it was used as a powder magazine. Two apse-like

niches for munitions can still be observed.

A narrow opening inside the room was used to access the upper storey of the bastion.
